California Trip…and so on…

September 16, 2014

What happens when Brandon has a conference at Stanford? Jonen and I get to go to California for a week! The first night I was questioning the whole logic of a toddler traveling. Jonen was jumping into the booth next to us for dinner (just Jonen and I, Bran had a happy hour). So I thought it was totally fine when he decided to take an entire stack of napkins under the table and lay on the ground. At least he was just grossing me out and not disturbing anyone else. Then bedtime came…Jonen was just so excited that he was jumping in and out of his pack in play and would NOT calm down. We ALMOST get him to sleep at 9 when someone was trying their key on our door!  SO we had another hour and a half before Jonen finally passed out.

The rest of the trip was actually really amazing. Jonen and I realized that every meal that I order was perfect sized for Mama and Jonen to share. Stanford was really fun to wander around. We found a great Junior Museum & Zoo in Palo Alto. It is an great little town where we just wandered around and checked out gardens. (I guess it doesn’t hurt to be in the heart of Silicon Valley.) Bran and I each got to meet up for a night out with old high school friends, and Bran spent his first night away from Jonen ever! (He spent the night in San Fran.)

Daddy was able to join in the fun on Thursday when we went to Santa Cruz. We somehow booked a hotel right on the beach. We went to Natural Bridges State Park, Monterey Bay Aquarium, saw where all the lettuce is grown in Watsonville, and saw some amazingly large redwoods at Big Basin Redwood State Park. The highlights were definitely watching the feeding time at the largest aquarium in the US (or world…not sure which), the Mother and Father trees, and sunsets on the beach. I never know what makes an impression on Jonen, but he was talking about sharks and tuna swimming tonight. He also talks about the big trees a lot, so I guess he was impressed with the same things we were.

Jonenisms:

  • He started telling “jokes” on the trip. (Oh poopy diaper really cracks him up…yes, potty humor has already started.)
  • He can recite his books. It was like he was reading his books to himself on the trip. (He HAS been listening!)
  • He has also picked up the habit of saying, “Daddy don’t sing that or Daddy don’t say that.” (Hmmm….Mama needs to watch what see says…)
  • He was always making “coffee” and very concerned about having milk and sugar. (Neither Bran or I like sugar though…so where does he get that??)

Entirely too many pics to follow..I can’t get them to line up chronologically…so just imagine they are in the right order:
