Introducing Samuel Elias

May 25, 2016

Let’s go through the excitement of the adoption process. On April 28th we are matched with an expectant birth mom who is due June 26th. She lives in Florida, but will fly to Washington to deliver. We are in prep mode painting the guest room and washing clothes.

Thursday, May 19th – Birth mom, Cat, goes into labor. This is after she has been told she would never be able to go into labor on her own.

Friday, May 20th

  • 1:50 am – Baby is born!!
  • 7:30 am – The adoption agency calls and tells us our baby is born in Jacksonville, Flordia. (I have to look at a map to verify Jacksonville’s location.) We have to book a flight, decide what is happening with Jonen, and notify the Airbnb guests at our house. Apparently, I packed tons for Bran, Jonen and baby…I only have 3 outfits. Whoops! Nana saves the day and books a flight that arrives about the same time as ours in Florida, so Jonen is taken care of. (He was BUMMED to miss the school picnic and show and tell, but excited to meet baby.) The guests are fine and our friend can come over and lock our house.
  • 12:00 pm – We are on our flight that has a layover in Denver. We book a hotel that looks close to the hospital and rent a car during the layover.
  • 11:30 [m – Arrive in Jacksonville. We load up the car and head to the hotel. Drop Nana and Jonen off and head to the hospital.
  • 12:30 am – Arrive at wrong hospital. Allowed to head up to the maternity ward before the nurses tell us there are 5 hospitals with the same name. We are 30 minutes from the right hospital.
  • 1:00 am – Arrive at the right hospital. We get to finally meet the birth mom, Cat, and baby. We promptly fall in love with both. Cat is a very thoughtful, mature, intelligent woman. We have so much in common. The love of reading, the unnatural fear of scuba diving, and we even had the same glasses. I really didn’t expect to get along so well. It was like we had known each other forever. She liked the name Samuel after his uncle. It is the PERFECT name for this little boy! Jonen and I had read the story of Samuel probably as she was going into labor the night before! Brandon and I started thinking of middle names.

Saturday, May 21st – Birth Mom, Brandon and I share the hospital room. We can take care of baby and just talk. We slept a bit on Saturday night. We figure out Elias or the middle name. We head to hang with Jonen and Nana for dinner before I goes back to the hospital for the night.

Sunday, May 22nd – Cat and I are just hanging out and talking.( I am going to respect her privacy and not post any pics of her.) We find out from the nurses that the lawyers are coming at 3 for all the paperwork. Cat and baby can be discharged. Cat and I take turns feeding the baby. It is all very natural. We had such a quick connection. It all feels very good. Leaving the hospital was a very hard moment. We were joyous for this amazing baby boy and were worried because Cat was alone. We all cried as we walked out the hospital door. The nursing staff was amazing and took excellent care of Cat, Samuel and us.

Monday, May 23rd – Nana has a friend who has a house on Amelia Island. We meet with the adoption agency and filled out even more paperwork. Then we headed out to the house. It was so nice to not be in the hospital or hotel!

Tuesday, May 24th – Samuel had his first doc appointment. He is down to 6 pounds 2 ounces.(He was born at 6 pounds 10 ounces at 19 inches long. He s very healthy!) We have one more document to sign at the lawyer. We are still waiting to see when we can go home. It is either Saturday or next Wednesday. We are hoping for Saturday. We just have to wait for all the legal paperwork, so we can leave the state.

Sorry for the long post. Our Samuel has a long birth story with lots of helpers!

Some pics of our lovely baby. He is so amazing.
